Guernsey Wartime Occupation

1940 2d Bisect used on the original piece from a cover SG 482a

The German occupation of the United Kingdoms Island of Guernsey began on the 19th of June 1940, and Britain stopped sending British stamps to be used in the islands, The local postage rate was 1d, and stocks of the 1d stamps were running out, so the Germans ordered the Bisecting the 2d stamps in half to make each half worth 1d for payment of postage.

The Germans finally printed their own stamps in 1941 for Guernsey SG 1 - 5 and Jersey SG 1 and 2 with a coat of arms, still with no hint of a German source. These stamps were in use until the Germans withdrew from the islands on 9th May 1945, and beyond, remaining valid until April 13 1946. The islands resumed using British issues until Oct. 1st October 1969, when they began issuing their own stamps.
